KING OF STINK examines "Ramps," the much-maligned wild leek from the high Appalachian mountains that is more malodorous than garlic. Eleven regional festivals in North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee and West Virginia are featured with expert commentary and in the words of local folks who celebrate the centuries-old springtime tradition of foraging the wild greens from deep mountain hollows. Gourmet chefs and urban "foodies" are now discovering this rare and notoriously pungent seasonal delicacy.
Some events have endured as a tradition for over 70 years, (See List) drawing hundreds of out-of-town visitors for a potent taste of the “old-time down home cooking”, bluegrass music and nostalgia. Ramps are celebrated as a “spring tonic” that can cure just about anything. “Ramps smell so bad that nobody can get close enough to give you a cold or the flu!”.
Highlights include comments from the warm and colorful organizers and regular visitors to the events. The raw ramp-eating contests are an awesome and hilarious spectacle...
